Super Nintendo World opens February 4 2021 at Universal Studios Japan

Super Nintendo World – The world’s first interactive Mario & Nintendo land will open with two rides.

Universal Japan announced that the delayed opening for the new Super Nintendo World will be February 4th 2021. The land was due to open last summer to coincide with the Olympic Games but was delayed due to Covid-19.

The much anticipated new land will feature two new rides, interactive elements and games throughout the land.

Mario Kart Koopa’s Challenge

Mario Kart Koopa's Challenge

The world of Mario Kart and its courses all come to life at the park using state-of- the-art technology! Guests will throw shells and take out opponents to race ahead with Mario and Princess Peach! The all-new, life-sized Mario Kart experience has countless thrills and excitement in the world’s first Mario Kart ride experience.

The Mario Kart ride will see riders compete for the Universal Cup in Bowsers Castle. Riders will sit in karts for 4 people, complete with steering wheel and will face off against other karts on a separate track.

The ride will feature Augmented Reality (AR) goggles that will allow the riders to collect power ups and throw them at other vehicles on the track. The ride will last approximately 5 minutes.

Below is the official concept art for the ride which showcases some of the tracks and themes you may see throughout the attraction including the iconic Rainbow Road!

Power Up Bands

Work your way through the games located throughout the area to collect three keys! Waiting for you is a dramatic boss battle with Bowser Jr. Jump, punch and use your entire body and all your instincts to win.

Guests will also be able to play interactive games throughout the land with Power Up Band Key Challenges, where you help Peach recover the Golden Mushroom taken by Bowser Jr. The bands will also be able to collect virtual items & coins. This will be linked to an app in your phone where you can compete for high scores.

Power Up bands will cost ¥3,200 (tax incl.) which is about 30 dollars.

If you look at the concept art compared to reality, Universal have done an incredible job of bringing the Mario and Super Nintendo World to life. There will be a plethora of Easter eggs scattered throughout the land as well as characters from other Nintendo franchises such as Pikmin.

A rumored Donkey Kong themed area is set to be an expansion plot for Super Nintendo World so there is still lots more to come.

This is the first Super Nintendo World area set to open, with Universal Hollywood and Orlando to have their own iterations in future.

We can’t wait to experience the land!
